TORONTO, ON – It’s heartbreaking, it’s heartwarming and it’s critically needed. The Thornhill Club and the Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre are pleased to announce a new alliance that will assist the Centre in providing counselling, psychosocial and peer support to grieving children, youth and their families from the time of initial diagnosis, during and after a death.
“At The Thornhill Club, we believe in fostering relationships and working together to make positive change in our local communities and beyond,” says Joe Murphy, General Manager at The Thornhill Club. “We’re excited to be taking the relationship beyond golf to help make a meaningful difference for youth and their families who are dealing with the loss of a loved one. This is an excellent opportunity for our members and other community supporters to assist a local charity that will benefit greatly from our initiatives.”
The Thornhill Club will host two community charity events leading up to The Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre Charity Day on Monday, June 12th.
The alliance will launch with an artistic, “Canvas & Cocktails” event for adults at The Thornhill Club on Saturday, February 25th. It will be followed by a fun-filled, family-oriented charity curling event at the club on Saturday, April 1st.
The Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre Charity Day on June 12th will be much more than just a golf day. Avid golfers will be able to enjoy a fabulous day of golf on The Thornhill Club’s enchanting Stanley Thompson designed layout. Other guests will be able to enjoy of full range of activities including; fitness and yoga classes, a tennis round robin, cooking demos, putting contests, complimentary golf tips and lessons on the practice tee, a bridge tournament, nine holes of golf on the Valley Course, raffles, the silent auction and a delicious dinner after golf.
The Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre provides programs and services for children and youth living with terminal illness and to young people who are experiencing, or have experienced, the death of an immediate family member. The Toronto-based charity provides individual counselling to children, youth and families, delivers peer support programs and mentorship training for youth, facilitates an annual bereavement camp, hosts monthly family night events, and conducts research in the field of death, grief, and bereavement that is shared through community education.
“We support families when there is a terminal diagnosis of an adult or child; when the grieving process begins, through the dying process and into bereavement support,” says Jay Bacher, Board Member and Co-Founder of the Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre. “Our vision is to build healthy and compassionate communities through supporting children, youth and families living with dying, death and grief.”
“One of our biggest challenges is spreading the word about who we are and what we do, so to join forces with The Thornhill Club and its members is exciting as we continue to grow and connect to communities within the Greater Toronto Area.”
Camp Erin-Toronto is a weekend-long overnight camp in Muskoka for bereaved children and teens across Ontario. The camp combines traditional outdoor camp activities, such as swimming and canoeing with grief education and emotional support activities, such as journal making and a candlelight memorial ceremony.
